Welcome to WMTA
The Washington D.C. Area's Guide to Good Musicianship!
Welcome to the Washington Music Teachers Association (WMTA), a non-profit affiliate of the Music
Teachers National Association (MTNA). Founded in 1934, over the years WMTA has become a prominent association of independent
music teachers from the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and Suburban Maryland in the pursuit
of the highest standards in music instruction.
WMTA includes more than 130 teachers of piano, voice, strings, music theory and composition. All members enjoy excellent opportunities for professional development through various activities available to them and their students. WMTA offers an outstanding range of competitions, recitals and festivals for instrumental, vocal and composition students, as well as a discussion group for teachers, Shop Talk. Details (dates, venues, repertoire, eligibility) are available on the calendar page and events page or by contacting WMTA event chairs. This website regularly updates event information, and the WMTA Newsletter reports about news in the organization, announces event results and introduces new members.
In accordance with the rules established by the Music Teachers National Association, WMTA holds MTNA National Competitions for students of different instruments and age groups.
As a 501(c)(3) organization, WMTA accepts tax-deductible donations to the full extent of the law. We owe much to the generosity of our sponsors, who support many of our featured events. If you would like make a donation to WMTA, please contact the WMTA Treasurer, Julie Slingerland.
