Welcome to WMTA
The Washington D.C. Area's Guide to Good Musicianship!
Founded in 1934, the Washington Music Teachers Association (WMTA), a non-for-profit affiliate of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), provides numerous opportunities for its membership of professional, independent musicians who are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence through teaching, performing, composition, music theory and research. Our membership includes more than 130 teachers of piano, voice, strings, winds, brass, composition and music theory, located principally in the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and Suburban Maryland.
Throughout the year we offer an outstanding range of activities for students in the form of competitive and non-competitive events. Students who study an instrument or composition with a WMTA teacher of good standing are eligible to participate in the MTNA Auditions. In 2006-2007 we introduced the Adult Recital and Shop Talk, which nurtures discussion of varied aspects of teaching in an informal setting. These two events are successfully continuing this year. The ConcertoFest is another new event which, thanks to enthusiastic participation this spring, will be repeated in 2008. For 2007-2008 we are pleased to introduce Adult Musicales, which offer adults of all levels multiple opportunities to perform in a public setting.
Please check our Calendar of Events for details and dates, and our WMTA events page, where you can find the rules for specific events such as eligibility, repertoire requirements, deadlines and application fees, as well as download event rules and application forms. WMTA's goal is to provide the highest standards of music instruction and professional development, and to promote the musical interests of teachers and students in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.
We welcome you to explore our website and learn more about WMTA offerings. Please contact WMTA if you have any questions about our organization, or if you would like to become a member. If you would like to speak with me directly, please feel free to contact me.
